  According to a report from the Gujarat ministry of environment, forest and climate change, the Gujarat forest department is in the process of purchasing 1,000 doses of purevax ferret distemper vaccine from Merial Inc. in the United States (MoEFCC). A total of 1,300 doses of the vaccine used to treat canine distemper virus (CDV) in lions were purchased in 2018, with 1,100 doses being used. Following a high number of lion deaths, up to 85 between January and May, the Centre has recommended that the Gujarat government form a special committee of specialists to investigate the cause. The CDV or any other disease that caused the majestic beasts' demise was not substantiated by the MoEF & CC report. The East Division of Gir forest has seen 59 deaths, according to the report. In less than two months in 2018, the deadly CDV claimed the lives of at least 27 Asiatic Lions in this area.
